Van Nuys Rotary was honored to be a part of the "LA Remembers" celebration on September 11, 2002. As part of the citywide commemorative events of the 9/11 disaster, an early morning stop was held at Fire Station #88, home of the Urban Search and Rescue Team that mobilized to give aid in NYC at Ground Zero. Fire Station #88 was STOP 3 on the route of the Vehicle Procession that had started at 5:30 am. Scheduled at 9:00 am, Van Nuys Rotary was tasked with providing a quick breakfast for some 250 people. The group included Firefighters in the LAFD Urban Search and Rescue Team, the LA Fire Chief, an Asst. Chief, the Mayor of LA, LA City Council people, a California Senator, LAPD motorcycle officers, a group of school children, other notables, media crews and the public. A moving series of speeches, introductions, songs and presentations honored the Urban Search and Rescue Team, commemorated the heroic and outstanding services of those in New York City and elsewhere in the rescue efforts and honored those who died in the catastrophe and their friends and loved ones. The Rotary Club of Van Nuys extends grateful thanks for major support in the breakfast presentation to the Airtel Plaza, Western Bagel, Costco, Krispy Kreme and others. |
